The Evolution of Connection

Beyond Words: The Three Paths of Human Encounter

Have you ever felt that you were speaking, but not truly meeting? In his profound article, "Fitting In, Pouring Out and Relating," philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlin (the founder of Focusing) outlines three distinct modes of human communication.

This presentation was created as an inspired visual journey through Gendlin’s insights. It explores the tension between our internal "Felt Sense" and the external structures of our relationships:

  • Fitting In: The traditional mode where we suppress our authentic selves to fulfill social roles, often leading to a "frozen" inner experience and a deep sense of isolation.

  • Pouring Out: The modern shift toward self-expression that, while authentic, can become a one-way "unilateral dumping" that fails to reach the other person.

  • Relating: A transformative third way where interaction is a living, mutual process. It is a shared reality where we are both changed by the encounter, allowing our lives to finally "carry forward."

I invite you to scroll through these slides and discover these paths within your own experiences.
