Beyond Words: The Three Paths of Human Encounter
Have you ever felt that you were speaking, but not truly meeting? In his profound article, "Fitting In, Pouring Out and Relating," philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlin (the founder of Focusing) outlines three distinct modes of human communication.
This presentation was created as an inspired visual journey through Gendlin’s insights. It explores the tension between our internal "Felt Sense" and the external structures of our relationships:
Fitting In: The traditional mode where we suppress our authentic selves to fulfill social roles, often leading to a "frozen" inner experience and a deep sense of isolation.
Pouring Out: The modern shift toward self-expression that, while authentic, can become a one-way "unilateral dumping" that fails to reach the other person.
Relating: A transformative third way where interaction is a living, mutual process. It is a shared reality where we are both changed by the encounter, allowing our lives to finally "carry forward."
At the Social Oriented Focusing - SOF School, by moving beyond pre-defined patterns into a living interaction, SOF embodies Gendlin’s vision of connection - where the space we hold allows for the organic emergence of a person’s next right step.we apply these principles of 'Somatic Completion' to help individuals and groups transform stalled childhood patterns into new, life-forward steps.
I invite you to scroll through these slides and discover these paths within your own experiences.

While Gendlin defines the "Third Way" of Relating as a mutual, living process, the Social Oriented Focusing - SOF model provides the practical sanctuary for this evolution to occur.
By applying SOF principles, we move beyond mere expression and into a state of Mutual Attunement. In this shared space:
Felt Sense Listening: We listen not just to words, but to the internal resonance as it emerges.
Self-Organizing Flow: We allow the interaction to be guided by the process itself, letting the wisdom of the body lead the way rather than a fixed script.
Carrying Forward: We create the conditions for "frozen" inner experiences to finally carry forward and transform into new life.
